Will Hardy

Artist Biography

My name is Will Hardy, I am a visual artist from Manchester who uses sculpture, performance, video and photography whilst also sonically transforming these styles using audio. Inspired by my musical upbringing and the Manchester indie-punk scene, alongside artist influences from Mark Leckey, Douglas Gordon and Rebecca Horn I cross mediums to create sculpturally informed performances and video-based installations.

Project Submission - How (to)/(not to) deal with change (Triptych):

This project is my reflection on the last year of my life. Moving from my childhood home in Manchester to the countryside in Yorkshire and also to the city of Leeds, whilst in an isolating global pandemic. The work uses 79 instrumental part, 7 minutes long sound-score that translates my feelings on the change I’ve experienced in the last year into music. It also builds on a taxonomy of change that I have written. The title “How (to)/(not to) deal with change (Triptych)” offers this taxonomy as a simple layout to agree or disagree with. (Triptych) comes to reference my 'rule of three' way of working in the work both in my sculptural component and my taxonomy.

My intrigue in translating sound into a physical form led me to translate the soundtrack into light, using frequency-based sound sensors and light activators that I coded. The sculptures make up three tetrahedrons that all respond differently based upon what they hear momentarily, therefore acting in their own light performance.

The work is personal to me in that it opens up a lot of acceptance towards the year I’ve had and also looks into where my identity has been placed or perhaps left in these new unfamiliar places.
